David Horak is an award-winning theatre director and actor who has worked throughout Canada and the United States at such theatre companies as The Freewill Players (King Lear, Comedy of Errors, The Winter's Tale), Workshop West Theatre (Kill Me Now), Theatre Yes (National Elevator Project), Vertigo Theatre (Ends of the Earth), The Citadel Theatre (Death of a Salesman), Plain Jane Theatre (Fun Home) and The Mayfield (Boeing Boeing, Don’t Dress for Dinner, Back to the '80's, Lend Me a Tenor). Often referred to as "The Swiss Army Knife of Alberta Theatre", he is also Artistic Director of the critically acclaimed Edmonton Actors Theatre and was recently appointed the new Artistic Director of the Freewill Shakespeare Festival.
David has worked with director Anne Bogart and New York based SITI Company and completed the SITI Intensive in Saratoga, New York twice. He also worked with New York-based The Actor’s Centre and completed the Teacher’s Development Program working with master teachers Ron Van Lieu (Former Chair of the Acting Program, Yale School of Drama), Slava Dolgachev (AD, New Theatre of Moscow), J. Michael Miller (Founder, NYU Drama), Fay Simpson (Lucid Body, Yale), and Jane Nichols (Improvisation, Yale).
He has taught classes in movement, acting, directing and devising at The University of Alberta, Concordia University of Edmonton, Red Deer College, The Foote Theatre School at The Citadel Theatre and was nominated for a Distinguished Teachers Award at Macewan University in 2018.
Some directing credits include Every Brilliant Thing at The Citadel Theatre, Collin Doyle's Terry and the Dog (nominated for 6 Sterling Awards, winning 3 for Production, Acting and Playwrighting), Stupid Fucking Bird at the Backstage Theatre (nominated for 7 Sterling Awards, winning 6 for production, design, acting and directing), Burning Bluebeard (nominated for 8 Sterling Awards, winning 5 for production, design, acting and directing), Fatboy (awarded 3 Sterling Awards and re-mounted at Theatre Network 3 years in a row), The Bomb-itty of Errors (Edmonton Actors Theatre), Sartre’s Shorts (Surreal SoReal), Measures! The Musical, The Inspector General and Cloud Nine (Citadel Theatre Young Company), and Eurydice (U of A Studio Theatre). Most recently he has performed in Tiny Bear Jaws Cleave, theatre no. 6’s Proud; 10 out of 12, Passion Play, and Small Mouth Sounds for Wild Side Productions and Blarney Production’s MOTE.
David holds BFA (Acting) and MFA (Directing) degrees from the University of Alberta and was a participant in the 2016 Citadel/ Banff Professional Theatre Program.
He is a proud member of Canadian Actors Equity (CAEA), AEA (USA), ACTRA, the Association of Theatre Movement Educators (ATME) and The National Alliance of Acting Teachers (USA).
